Weidergutmachtung -

Gripping period drama with wry humour

In post war Germany three lawyers from different countries meet to settle a large reparation claim in conjunction with the new German Federal Indemnification Law which, apparently, seems open to abuse.

Consequently, as the story unfolds, a serious doubt occurs as to whether the victim in the reparation claim is actually dead and a routine legal assignment turns into a hair-raising adventure through Southern Germany and the Bavarian Forest.

This period drama is set against an atmospheric slice of modern European history; the western half of a divided Germany aspiring to move on from its Nazi nightmare and find its identity. Although not musical (it does have some music) the book is a kind of "Cabaret" of post war Germany.

It has a set of memorable and loveable characters, an offbeat romance and quite a lot of humour. As an example why not read the opening chapter which has a hilarious scene as Gunter inadvertently causes huge embarrassment while discussing an adultery case on the London underground.
